PADI TECREC Training

PADI Technical Diver Training courses

Gozo Aqua Sports is the first dive centre on Gozo to receive the PADI TecRec Centre Award, thereby guaranteeing an expert level of quality technical diving services and training. Whether you are a seasoned Tec diver looking to explore the sites of Gozo or a beginner looking for your first technical diving experience, Gozo Aqua Sports is the one stop centre for you.

Technical diving is scuba diving’s “extreme sport”, taking experienced and qualified divers far deeper and further than in mainstream recreational diving. Technical diving is marked by significantly more equipment and training requirements to manage the additional hazards this type of diving entails.

Using highly experienced and knowledgable Instructors we are pleased to be able to offer an excellent range of courses for those divers who are looking for that extra challenge. If you haven't tried technical diving and aren't sure if it is for you, before taking a full course then why not book a Discover TEC with us to help you make up your mind. Please click on the courses currently on offer below for more information.

PADI standards stipulate that it is mandatory that all students have their own course manuals for use during the course & to retain for reference afterwards. It is HIGHLY recommended that you read the course materials and complete the relevant Knowledge Reviews prior to your arrival. This way we are able to reduce the time spent in the classroom and concentrate on developing and implementing your new technical diving skills.
The Tec courses and diving that we offer at Gozo Aqua Sports often result in you operating at depths that are not covered by standard holiday insurance. In most cases, you will find that even your normal scuba diving insurance is restrictive. It is a requirement that any diver wishing to use our services must carry the relevant personal insurance and without this we will unfortunately not be able to accommodate you. Please contact us if you have any questions or require assistance regarding insurance cover options that are available.

TEC 45:

The TEC 45 course follows on from the TEC 40 and takes your training as a Tec diver further and deeper. It is the 2nd subdivision of the full DSAT TEC Deep Diver programme. You will be introduced to the first stages of full technical deep decompression diving. The diver must use full `standardised’ tech rig, including wings and doubles plus an additional deco cylinder - note that side mounted cylinders are an acceptable alternative to back mounted doubles throughout the entire TecRec range.
A Tec 45 Diver is qualified to: Make single and repetitive dives to a maximum depth of 45 metres. Use a single decompression gas of EANX, or oxygen, to accelerate or add conservatism to the decompression.

Prerequisites:

TEC 40 diver or equivalent. Minimum of 50 logged dives (of which 12 dives were made with EANX, deeper than 18 metres and at least 6 deeper than 30 metres with/without EANX). Medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months. CPR trained within the last 2 years. Minimum of 18 years old.

TRIMIX 45:

This is an optional add on course to the Tec 45, you will learn about planning and the safe usage of helium for technical dives using normoxic trimix with a minimum of 21% oxygen and a maximum of 20% helium. The ideal blend would be 21% O2 & 20% He, this giving you an equivalent narcotic depth of 34 metres. Thus, making you a lot clearer headed than diving on air at 45 metres and therefore enabling you to dive in a safer and more alert environment.
What can I do after completion? You will be able to purchase trimix blends with a minimum of 21% oxygen and a maximum of 20% Helium and perform gas switching limited trimix decompression dives.

Price includes:

PADI Certification fees, all tuition, transport, tanks, weights, air, nitrox & helium.

Price excludes:

Tec Trimix Manual or Crew Pack and personal diving equipment.

Should you wish equipment can be rented from our centre for the duration of the course.

TEC 50:

The TEC 50 is the 3rd and final subdivision of the DSAT TEC DIVER programme and expands the existing skills learnt on the TEC 45 course, with an added emphasis on mission planning and execution. This course represents a high level of competency for a technical diver.
A Tec 50 Diver is qualified to: - Use air, EANX and oxygen for multiple stop decompression dives as a deep as 50 metres using standard open circuit, multiple cylinder (back mount and/or side mount) TEC diving equipment. Use two decompression gases (EANX and/or Oxygen) to accelerate or add conservatism to the decompression.

Prerequisites:

Full TEC TRIMIX -  HYPOXIC:

The DSAT TEC TRIMIX diver course is intended for technical divers certified as DSAT TEC Deep (or qualifying certification from another organisation). The course extends their depth range capabilities by training them in the use of trimix (helium, oxygen and nitrogen). This course lets the diver go deeper, opening up the option of using travel gases and trimix with less than 18% oxygen content. Dives during the course can be as deep as 90 metres/300 feet. Once qualified, the diver can start to explore deeper; for this reason, there is no numbered suffix after the course title as in the rest of the range – there are no limits placed on how deep the diver can go after training, providing they build their experience gradually.

Prerequisites:

Certified as a TEC50 or TEC TRIMIX 65 Diver or equivalent. Certified as a PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent. Certified as a DSAT TEC Deep Diver or equivalent certification in deep decompression diving using air/enriched air from another training organisation. Minimum of 150 logged dives. Medical form signed by a physician in the last 12 months. CPR trained within the last 2 years. Minimum of 18 years old.

Duration:

8 days. 8 Dives

Cost:

€1,500

Price includes:

PADI Certification fees, all tuition, tank rental, air, O2 and helium.

Price excludes:

Tec Trimix Crew Pack and personal diving equipment.

If starting the course as a TEC 50 qualified diver, you will need to complete an additional dive on Trimix and will be charged an extra €120/£88 to cover the cost of the additional helium used.

DSAT GAS BLENDER: – Nitrox or Trimix

You will learn all about safe blending of oxygen and helium.  Learn how to oxygen clean cylinders, regulators, valves etc.

TEC SIDEMOUNT:

Giving divers a new and alternative way to configure their tanks – Sidemount diving offers an innovative way to streamline in the water, offers easier equipment transportation when topside (instead of hauling double tank configurations around), helps in reducing lower back strain and gives a redundant gas supply.

The PADI Sidemount Scuba Diving Speciality Course teaches you:  How to learn a unique way of buoyancy control resulting in a more streamlined profile that reduces drag making fining and moving through the water easier and more efficient. Attain a greater comfort level as Sidemount equipment and harness can be custom fit to each individual, accommodating divers of all shapes and sizes. How to take advantage of many skills including learning how to help any divers with any disabilities, as you carry the cylinder(s) separate from your harness to the water.

Whilst within the water you would then attach your cylinders and weights, making the entries and exits to dive sites much easier. Learn safer options in terms of air management as you have an easier access to your cylinder valve(s), first stage(s) and alternate regulator should a problem arise.
How to configure equipment learning that one harness and BCD does it all. This statement is now true as the same sidemount equipment you use, can be used for more advanced types of diving i.e. wreck, technical and cave diving.

Prerequisites:

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent rating. Minimum of 20 logged dives and 18 years old. For qualified Trimix Divers this course can be completed using Trimix.

Duration:

2-3 days.1 Confined Water Dive + 4 Open Water Dives.

Cost:

€480

Price includes:

PADI Certification fees, all tuition, tank rental, air/O2, transport.

Price excludes:

Personal diving equipment & Helium if used

NB. If there is only one student on the course then they must pay for their own & their instructors Helium. If 2 or more students are on the same course, then students only pay for any Helium that they use personally.

Should you wish equipment can be rented from our centre for the duration of the course.
