Maltese Diving Regulations

New Maltese Diving Regulations

The most recent Diving Regulations came into force on 16th July 2010.  Information is to be found on the Professional Diving Schools Association of Malta website. The requirements for divers on their next visit to Malta & Gozo are as follows:-

1. Medical Requirement

A simple self-declaration medical statement has to be filled in by all divers at our diving centre. This statement will highlight those people who must seek further medical advice and/or examination prior to diving. Should the need arise, we can arrange for a local medical to be taken at our premises by a Gozo diving physician costing only €25.00.

2. Dive Permits

Divers no longer have to apply to the Dept of Health for a Dive Permit. Now all divers have to simply complete a registration form on arrival at the diving centre. If you intend to dive without a local guide you must hold PADI Advanced, BSAC Sports, CMAS 2 Star or equivalent qualification.

3. Minimum Age

Minimum age requirements are now as stipulated by the training agency involved. At Gozo Aqua Sports the minimum age for PADI training courses is 10 years of age. Minimum age for certified divers wishing to purely dive with us is 10 years of age.

4. Technical Diving

The use of rebreathers, nitrox and trimix are now sanctioned, subject to the normal restrictions of training and experience.

5. Instructors

Only licensed Dive Centres are allowed to offer scuba training or other recreational diving services. Qualified Instructors who wish to supervise training or diving for those less than PADI Advanced, BSAC Sports, CMAS 2 Star or equivalent, must do so through a licensed Dive Centre. The Instructor will first have to register with a Dive Centre, presenting their Instructor qualification and a copy of an annual Instructor diving medical and insurance. A Maltese Instructor Permit will no longer be required but a form of photographic identification issued by a licensed Dive Centre will be issued.
