There are lots of different varieties of fish and sealife around Gozos' Meditteranean waters.
The combination of sheer cliffs, caves, wrecks, shelves and sandy and rocky sea beds, means that there's huge variety of fauna and flora to see in the Maltese waters. it might be too tough to list all of them. Wrecks, which act as artificial reef habitats, have provided a home for a larger variety of species in recent years and make wonderful dive sites.
Species you're likely to see include groupers, amberjack, various bream, octopi, squid, flying fish, gurnard, stingrays, meagre, bogue, red mullet, parrot fish and also the occasional eel. Though the rocky structures and underwater coast seem ideal living conditions for eel, you tend to see them mostly throughout night dives.
John Dory are often spotted, mostly during winter, since they usually live at greater depths. Corals are found on arches, reefs and caves. They glow an exquisite orange to pink color and are particularly excellent to photograph at nighttime.
There are a few sea animals to observe but not handle as they have vicious, toxic or poisonous bristles and spines. Keep your eyes open for the scorpion fish, bristleworms, sea urchins and also the stingray. If you do step on or touch one among these fish, ask for medical attention as your reaction to the injury can rely on your general medical condition and age.
Everyone is very helpful and friendly and the equipment available to hire is faultless. I really enjoyed my test dive, and felt safe in the hands of the instructors who have clear and confident instruction. The centre was very well organised and everyone was so friendly. We did 5 dives over 2 days and they were great. Thank you for a lovely relaxed but fun diving experience.
I visited Gozo for a dive holiday with friends and chose to dive through Gozo Aqua Sports. A fabulous decision. All of the staff were so welcoming and friendly and made us feel at home throughout the week. Staff were thorough and extremely helpful in assisting us to select, understand and maintain our equipment. We completed our Open Water course with Martin, a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor who made us feel at ease throughout.
No doubt, Gozo Aqua Sports is the place to be if you want to spend a great diving holiday on Gozo. We started diving with Gail and Patrick more than 20 years ago and this year, the second generation of the family passed the open water course in the same place. There is a well equipped shop and a lot of different diving activities including Tec diving as well as friendly helpful staff.
From the minute we emerged from baggage claim, we were looked after. Gail at GAS had arranged our transfers across the two islands and had our apartment, vehicle keys, and paperwork waiting for us. Gail and GAS instructor Martin were ready with advice on weather and sea conditions to make sure our independent diving went safely. As ever my wife and I had first class friendly and effective service. I wouldn't go anywhere else on Gozo.
